THE A TO Z HIKING PROJECT
AUBURN STATE RECREATION AREA
AUBURN STATE RECREATION AREA
Starting my A-Z hiking adventure at Auburn State Recreation Area was a no brainer. In addition to being one of the first place I ever hiked when I moved to Sacramento, the American River travels through the park, so with two As in the picture (good luck in Chinese culture) there was no other option.
Auburn State Recreation Area, is only a short distance off of Highway 80 in Auburn, California and has countless hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails throughout. It's a favorite for locals seeking fresh air and nature. In the summer, people seek out swimming nooks to enjoy. I've hiked various trails in the area over the past years and have always appreciated having access to this space so close to home.
Most trails follow alongside the American River, and trail goers are accompanied by miles of clear water and deep green pools. In the fall, these pools are highlighted by the changing colors of the surrounding fauna.
One of the most popular trails is the Lake Clementine Trail. This 2.5 mile trail takes you up 800 ft climb to the Clementine Dam, a striking spot with "waterfall" views. This spot is a favorite for photos.
When arriving, visitors park on Old Foresthill Road where there is designated roadside parking and self-serve day use fee kiosks. There are also restrooms and a ranger station. It's best to get there before 9am if seeking a less crowded hike and guaranteed parking.
