LISA HIKES FROM A TO Z

AUBURN STATE RECREATION AREA

Starting the Lisa Hikes From A to Z project at Auburn State Recreation Area was a no brainer. In addition to being one of the first places I ever hiked after moving to Sacramento, the American River travels through it. So with two As involved (good luck in Chinese culture) this was an easy choice for kicking off my alphabetic adventure.

Auburn State Recreation Area, is only a short distance off of Highway 80 in Auburn, California and has countless hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails throughout. It's a favorite for locals seeking fresh air and nature. I've hiked various trails here over the past several years and have always appreciated having access to this space so close to home.

Before venturing here, read my need-to-know tips at the end of this page. You will also find a link to my AllTrails recording of my hike, which I enjoyed in the Fall of 2020.

Clarks Hole, North Fork American River

Most of the trails in the Area follow alongside the American River, giving trail goers the pleasure of being accompanied by miles of clear water and deep green pools. In the summer, people flock here to seek out swimming nooks to splash around in. In the fall, these pools are highlighted with the changing colors of the surrounding flora.

One of Auburn State Recreation Area's most popular trails is the Lake Clementine Trail. After hiking 2.5 miles and 800 feet up you will find the Clementine Dam, a striking spot with "waterfall" views. This spot is a favorite to take a break, refuel, and snap a photo before hiking back.

The Lake Clementine Trail is one of a plethora of trusty trails within Auburn State Recreation Area. There are so many to choose from, I doubt even the locals get bored here.

NEED TO KNOW

PARKING: There is designated roadside parking for visitors along Old Foresthill Road.
FEE: $10 day use fee. Bring cash or check and use the self-serve kiosks.
AMENITIES: There are restrooms near the parking spaces along Old Foresthill Road and at the nearby ranger station.

TIPS

On weekends, get there before 9am to avoid crows and for guaranteed parking.

Wear layers. You'll appreciate some warmth in the cool morning on the mostly shaded trail. However, the steady climb up and warming air will get your blood flowing and you'll want to shed a layer.

After hiking up 2 miles you will come to a paved road which will split in two ways, one going up in elevation, one going down in elevation with a gate; take the route going down. In this last half mile before the dam, watch out for the occasional vehicle that comes through.

When you're done, take short drive to Ikeda's Country Market to delight your taste buds. Not only do they have THE BEST pies in town (any of the cobblers are my favorite), they make mouth watering sandwiches, burgers, pot pies, pasties that compare to Michigan's, and a great boutique selection of beverages and beers.
